Toyota’s ETCS (Electronic Throttle Control System), often referred to as ETCS-i (“intelligent”), is a drive-by-wire throttle system that replaces the traditional mechanical linkage between the gas pedal and the throttle body with an electronic control system. The system uses sensors on the accelerator pedal and throttle plate, a throttle actuator motor, and the Engine Control Module (ECM) to continuously calculate and set the optimum throttle-valve position based on driver input, engine conditions, and other vehicle systems like traction or stability control.
